April 2007.
An unexpected email from Federico Colpi of D-visual company.
He knew my site and he understood how much important was for me the work of master Go Nagai.
Federico invited me to meet Go Nagai in Rome
I was late that day. I found the hotel but Nagai wasn't in his room. I found him in the hall with Federico Colpi and his entourage.
I was speechless!
How to explain ... it's like having a 8 years old child inside! You want to scream, to jump but you can't.
First of all because you are not a child anymore and also because you don't want to be pathetic acting like a child!
We sat, we talked a little with the help of Colpi translation. I spoke and he listened kindly.
I said a bunch of nonsense but it is not easy to be calm. I wanted to explain that his robots and heroes enjoy my childhood.. there are not simple things to say.
I wanted to ask him a drawing or a dedication but it's Go Nagai! You can not ask Nagai to make a drawing for you. He is too important!
I shoot a photo with him and he shoot a photo with me! Strange isn't it!..I suspect that Colpi said to him that I was famous in Italy otherwise I cannot explain why Nagai wanted a photo with me.
I conclude by saying that was very very kind, he was always smiling, he was the image of serenity!
A wonderful day!

Kiyhioshi "Go" Nagai (born in Japan on September 6 1945), is the prince of "mangaka", he is actually the greatest living author in this field. The reason of this is the great amount of Japanese cartoon he create, Mazinger Z, The Great Mazinger, Steel Jeeg, Grendizer, Getter Robot, Gaiking and Devilman, considered by many his masterpiece.
But Go Nagai is not only a mangaka: in 1968 he founded a company named "Dynamic Production", creator of big productions comics.
The Master began his work in 1967 with the comic Meakashi Porikiki, but had to wait until 1972 to get the deserved success. In that year he create the already mentioned "Devilman" appreciated by all the Japanese readers.
|
From Devilman onwards, the success of Go Nagai was constantly rising and its subsequent works (Cutey Honey, Kekko Kamen, Violence Jack, Getter Robot, Mazinger, Grendizer, Hanappe Bazooka and Mazinkaiser) just increased the importance of this giant of manga.
The Master has almost always had, in the years'70 and'80, the total hegemony in robotic and horror manga. His heroes are often motivated by a thirst for justice but the violence has a cathartic function, certainly not exhortative.
The great popularity of Go Nagai is also due to the fact that he have been able to choose excellent employees. First of all Ken Ishikawa, his pupil and colleague, he worked continuously in his career, giving birth to lots of works as Getter Robot. Do not forget the character designer who has most contributed to the success of animated Maestro Nagai: Kazuo Komatsubara. |
